Lengths of milled steel glide
past one another. Motors whirr productively in the background. Recorded during
the exhibition Moving In Stasis, this film depicts the satisfying functionality
of the machine ‘The Surfactant Continuum’. With the halls of the gallery void
of an audience due to the coronavirus pandemic, the machine is only to be
viewed and understood by a representation that is captured and created by the
machine itself. A 3-axis camera mounted at the core produces a depiction of
seemingly perfect functionality, a satisfying circular system: at least from
within the frame of the lens. This project questions the production of visual
spectacle, juxtaposing a physical machine with its online representation.
